Installation of OS/2 Warp version 4.0 on Thinkpad 380/385

This procedure is for installing OS/2 Warp version 4.0 on the IBM Thinkpad
380/385 series machines. This includes all models except the base Thinkpad
380 and 380E (non-CD-ROM models). This procedure can be used for the 380 and
380E models if they have the dealer installed CD-ROM option.
This procedure is for basic OS/2 installation and operation including video and
audio features installation.
The files listed in this procedure are available from the IBM PC Company BBS at
phone: (919) 517-0001, anonymous ftp: ftp.pcco.ibm.com, and World Wide Web site:
http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/files.html.
Note: The actual file descriptions listed here may vary from the descriptions
as posted on the BBS, the ftp site, and the WEB. The file name, size,
and date should be exact.
The Thinkpad should be placed on AC power prior to beginning the installation.
Failure to do so can cause various inconsistencies in the installation which
will prevent the system from functioning normally.
*** Preliminary Setup ***
Obtain the following files from IBM for the Thinkpad being used, run each from
a temporary directory and follow the instructions to create the diskettes as
listed.

Note: The Utility Disk for DOS is only needed if Thinkpad Personalization is
desired during Thinkpad Features installation.
*** Installation ***
Consult the README file on the Thinkpad System Update diskette for the Thinkpad
being used and follow the instructions for use.
Boot the Thinkpad from the Installation diskettes and proceed through the
first part of the installation.
During the initial boot up, the error message:
SYS0049: The MOUSE$ device is not functioning.
Select 'Return error code to program' and continue. This may need to be done
twice in order for the installation to continue.
After the Thinkpad re-boots to the System Configuration Screen, select VGA for
the video display (this should be the default). For the Thinkpad 380D and 385D
models, select the Thinkpad 755CD, TEAC CD-40E for CD-ROM support. For the
Thinkpad 380ED 385ED models, select the Hitachi 7730, 7930 for CD-ROM support.
For all models, Multimedia Hardware Support should be set to None. SoundBlaster
PRO support will be selected as default for Multimedia Hardware support and must
be removed. For all models, choose Thinkpad 760ED for PCMCIA support.
** Special Note on PCMCIA Support **
After the installation completes, there will be 2 errors on PCMCIA drivers on
reboot, an invalid switch and an error that IBM2SS14.SYS did not load. Edit the
CONFIG.SYS and remove the /S0=2 from the BASEDEV=IBM2SS04.SYS line, and remark
out the BASEDEV=IBM2SS14.SYS line. Shutdown and reboot.
*** LAN Network Support ***
Note: This section is for LAN connected systems only. If only the Internet
Connection via modem is required, then see the next section on 'Internet
Connection via Modem'.
For networking support installation, consult the network administrator for
client selection. Assuming the common configuration of both LAN Requestor and
TCP/IP support:
1. Select 'File and Print Client' for OS/2 LAN Requestor and Peer support.
2. Select 'TCP/IP Services' for TCP/IP support.
Note: Eliminate Step 1 if only TCP/IP support is required, and vice versa.
Select 'Next' to proceed to the 'Welcome to Configuration' panel.
For the File and Print Client:
1. Select the 'File and Print Sharing Services' and from the configuration
panel, select the installation drive to install the File and Print Client
to. Fill in the Workstation name, the Workstation description, and the
Domain name as supplied by the network administrator. 'LAN Server
Administration' and 'Install Sharing' are checked by default. 'Delete
user ID database (NET.ACC)' is not necessary unless instructed to do so
by the network administrator.
2. Select 'Network Adapters and Protocol Services' and from the configuration
panel, select the installation drive to install to. Change the network
adapter by selecting 'Change adapter' and highlighting 'IBM PCMCIA
Token-Ring Network Adapters'. Select 'OK' to continue. IBM NETBIOS and
IBM TCP/IP are the default protocols added for the adapter. Add any
additional protocols as instructed by the network administrator.
3. Select 'Network Adapters for File and Print Sharing' and verify that
Adapter 0 is checked and is shown as the IBM PCMCIA Token-Ring adapter.
4. Select 'User ID and Password' and fill in the information as instructed by
the network administrator.
For TCP/IP Services:
1. Select the 'TCP/IP Services' and from the configuration panel, select the
installation drive to install TCP/IP to. Fill in the rest of the required
information as instructed by the network administrator.
Note: TCP/IP Services do not need to be configured at this point of the
installation. They can be configured later using the TCP/IP
Configuration from the OS/2 System Setup folder.
Select 'Install' and proceed with the rest of the installation.
*** Internet Connection via Modem Support (no LAN) ***
Note: This section is for installing only the modem version of the Internet
Connection with no LAN connectivity.
From the OS/2 Warp Setup and Installation panel for networking services, select
'TCP/IP Services' and then select 'Next' to proceed to the 'Welcome to
Configuration' panel.
Select 'Network Adapters and Protocol Services' and from the configuration
panel, select the installation drive to install to. Change the network adapter
by selecting 'Change adapter' and highlighting 'IBM Null MAC Driver'. Select
'OK' to continue. IBM TCP/IP will be the only protocol added for the adapter,
and it is the only one necessary for the Internet Connection to function. Do
not select TCP/IP Services from this configuration, no configuration is
required. Select install to proceed with the installation.
*** Installing Thinkpad Features ***
Install the Thinkpad Features for OS/2 using the INSTALL2 program from the
Thinkpad Utilities for OS/2 diskette. The INSTALL2 program can be run from an
OS/2 window. Remove the check on the Install Personalization Editor and select
Install to complete the installation.
Note: Thinkpad Personalization can be installed and run, just make sure to have
the Thinkpad Utilities for DOS Diskette available during the install.
*** Video Installation ***
Install the Video Features Disk for OS/2 Warp by inserting the diskette and type
SETUP x, where x is the drive in which OS/2 is installed; and follow the
instructions.
*** Audio Features Installation ***
Insert the Audio Features Disk for OS/2 into drive A: Using the Multimedia
Application Install object from the Install/Remove folder in the System Setup
folder, direct the source drive and path to the A:. Select both Crystal Audio
and IBM OPL3 FM MIDI. Click OK and proceed with the installation. After the
installation completes, shutdown and re-boot the system. Verify that the follow
ing lines were installed in CONFIG.SYS:

DEVICE=x:\MMOS2\OPL3.SYS /P:388 /N:OPL31$
where x is the drive in which OS/2 Warp is installed. This installation will
also enable audio support in WINOS2 sessions as well.
*** Special Considerations ***
On any of the 380/385 models which have the Intel Pentium MMX processor, when
the installation drive is formatted FAT, there will be a distinctively long
pause at boot up while loading the IBM1S506 IDE driver. This issue is corrected
by applying OS/2 Warp 4.0 FixPak XR_M003 or later.
