Flying With Major Streib

Werner Streib can be considered
the "Father of German Night-
Fighting." He began his career
as a pessimist regarding night-
fighting, but by late 1940 was
a foundation member of NJG1,
based at Venlo. By mid-1943 he
was a Major with 50 night kills
to his credit, and was thus re-
garded as something of an expert
on night combat. Streib was one
man whom the Heinkel firm con-
sulted when building their He219
Uhu night fighter, and it was
Streib who later first flew this
excellent aircraft into combat
for the first time, shooting down
5 bombers in one evening. By mid-
1944, Streib was appointed In-
spector of Night Fighters, a post
in which he continually called
for more He219s. He ended the war
with 66 victories, all but one
earned at night.
ORDERS: You are flying as a wing-
man to Major Streib as you attack
a bomber stream. Learn from the
master while attempting to make a
few kills yourself. Your He219
has unlimited ammo.
