The Peenemunde Raid

WEATHER: Niteowl
INSERTS: None
RADAR: 'Serrate' (map usable)

On the night of Aug. 17-18, 1943, the
RAF launched a major attack on the
V-weapon testing and manufacturing facility
at Peenemunde. To insure success, Fighter
Command 'donated' 10 Beaufighters of
141 Squadron to the mission. This
unit, commanded by W.Comm. J.R.D.Branham,
was the RAF's first 'Serrate'-equipped
unit. 'Serrate' was a passive sensor which
could detect the radar emissions of German
night fighters. Thus, the 141 Sqn. Beaus
were assigned the task of distracting local
German night-fighters from the bomber
streams passing to the north.
Branham's flight was detected by German
ground controllers, and 5 Bf110s of IV/NJG1
at Leeuwarden were sent to intercept. Branham
himself downed two, and the unit made it home
without loss or damage.

ORDERS:
Engage as many German aircraft as possible.
Any aircraft you shoot down or distract will
be unable to fly on to Peenemunde once the
German command realizes that it is tonight's
target.
