GABES AIRFIELD

On the 4th of February 1943, in a
continuing effort to hamper Luftwaffe
efforts in North Africa, a force of 24
B-17s escorted by P-38s attacked the
Gabes airfield. The bombers encountered
heavy German fighter attacks, and one B-
17 and four P-38s failed to return.
Allied claims of 16 German fighters shot
down were probably exaggerated. Air
attacks against Gabes were becoming a
regular event; on the 8th it was hit by
33 medium bombers causing more damage to
parked aircraft and buildings.

MISSION

Destroy as many of the buildings and
parked aircraft as possible in the Gabes
airfield to support the overall Allied
effort in Tunisia.

NOTES

This is a day mission.
