C-202 BOMBER INTERCEPTION TRAINING

The Macchi C202 "Folgore" (Thunderbolt)
was one of the Regia Aeronautica's
primary fighters, entering service in the
summer of 1941 as an improvement over the
C200. Not very fast or well armed, it
still performed well and had a reputation
for ruggedness and was fairly
maneuverable. It remained in production
throughout the war until the Italian
Armistice in 1943. The C202 had two
Breda-SAFAT 12.7mm machineguns in the
nose, and 2 x 7.7mm Breda-SAFAT
machineguns in the wings. A later option
gave it two underwing cannon pods, each
with an MG151 20mm cannon. The German
engine in the C202 gave it a remarkable
resemblance to the Bf109 series.
SPECS: Max speed of 370 mph at 19,685
