                   The Junkers Ju88A-4/Trop

The development of the Ju88A-4 began early in 1940, with some
of the major improvements being in the area of defensive
armament. The pilot's single forward firing 7.9mm machinegun
was supplemented by either a single 13mm mg or a twin MG 81Z
7.9mm installation, fired by the bombadier through the nose.
Again, either a single MG 131 13mm or a twin MG 81Z 7.9mm was
provided in the rearward-firing ventral gondola. The rear of
the cockpit (the dorsal position) was upgraded to a twin
7.9mm MG 81Z. In mid 41 the rear of the cockpit was bulged
out to provide more room to swivel the guns, and had circular
armored mountings.
Offensively, the plane could carry four 551 pound bombs or
two 1102 pound bombs externally in conjunction with 10 110
pound bombs in the interanl bay.
The Ju88A-4s which were "tropicalized" by forward maintenance
units received sand filters, sun blinds, and desert survival
equipment. The designation of such planes was the Ju88A-
4/Trop, whereas planes having the tropical modifications from
the factory were called the Ju88A-11.
Top speed was 292 mph at 17,390 feet. Range was 1112 miles,
and service ceiling was 26,900 feet. Crew - 4.

TO USE THIS PLANE:

Press "G" to access the gun positions, as if the plane were a
B-17. Only the positions that were on the Ju88 are active -
a twin 81Z in the nose, a twin 81Z in the rear of the upper
cockpit (represented by the top turret) and a twin 81Z in the
ventral gondola (represented by the ball turret). The top
and ball turrets have had their arcs of fire correctly
reduced from 360 degrees to a rear-facing 60 degree arc.
Press "B" to access the dive brakes.
I did not install a Norden bombsight, as it would have
precluded the dive brakes, and shallow dive attacks/close
support operations seem to have been more prevalent than
high-level mass bombing.
