 Installation direction
 ----------------------
The drive may be mounted in any attitude!

 Recommended Mounting Configuration
 ----------------------------------
The drive is designed to be used in applications where the unit may
experience shock and vibrations at greater levels than larger and
 heavier disk drives.

The design features which allow greater shock tolerance are the use
of rugged heads and media, a dedicated landing zone, closed loop
servo positioning and specially designed motor and actuator
 assemblies.

Four (4) bottom or six (6) side mounting points are provided to the
customer. The drive is mounted using 6-32 x 1/4" thread screws. The
screw insertion depth into the side mounting points should not exceed
1/8". The system integrator should allow ventilation to the drive to
ensure reliable drive operation over the operating temperature range.

For additional vibration isolation, an external suspension system
 may be used.

 Cable Requirements
 ------------------
A 50-conductor flat cable no more than 6.0 meters (19.68 ft) in
length with at least 28 AWG wire size and a characteristic impedance
of 90 to 140 ohms (132 ohms nominal) is required.

 Connector Requirements
 ----------------------
The drive connector (J2) is a 50-position header which consists of
two rows of 25 male pins on 0.100" centers.

 Power Connectors
 ----------------
The drive has a 4-pin DC power connector (J6) mounted on the PCB. The
recommended mating connector is AMP part number 1-480424-0 utilizing
AMP pins, part number 350078-4 or equivalent.

 Cabling
 -------
Connect the power cable to J6. Connect the SCSI interface cable to
J2. Bus termination is required on only the last device of the SCSI
 Bus.

 SCSI Termination
 ----------------
The drive uses 220/330 ohm pull up resistors on all eighteen SCSI bus
signals. These resistors are supplied +5V from the initiator through
the TERMPWR line J2-26. If TERMPWR is not available from the
initiator, the drive supplies TERMPWR through diode CR3.

 SCSI Bus Attachment
 -------------------
A drive may be daisy-chained with other SCSI targets on a SCSI Bus.
Only the last drive should have its termination resistor packs
 installed.

 Electrical Description
 ----------------------
The drive uses open collector drivers. All assigned aignals are
terminated with 220 ohm resistor to +5 volts and 330 ohm resistor to
ground. The termination resistors for the CP30170E drive are housed
in three single-in-line (SIP) packages and are removable for multi-
 device configuration.

 Output Characteristics
 ----------------------
Each signal driven by the drive has the following output
characteristics when measured at the drive connector:

Signal Assertion 0.0 VDC to 0.4 VDC
Minimum Driver Output Capability 48 ma (sinking) at 0.5 VDC
Signal Negation 2.5 VDC to 5.25 VDC

 Input Characteristics
 ---------------------
Each signal received by the drive must have the following input
characteristics when measured at the drive connector:

Signal Assertion 0.0 VDC to 0.8 VDC
Maximum Total Input Load -0.4 ma (sinking) at 0.4 VDC
Signal False 2.0 VDC to 5.25 VDC

 Acoustic Sound Emission
 -----------------------
The sound pressure level will not exceed 42 dBA at a distance of 1
 meter from the drive.

 SCSI Bus
 --------
Termination power (TERMPWR) is supplied through a diode (CR3) to
prevent the back-flow of power to the drive. TERMPWR has the
 following characteristics:

Supply voltage +4.0V DC to +5.25V DC
Minimum source drive capability 800 ma
Maximum sink capability *1.0 ma w/1.0 amp fuse

 * Except for the purpose of providing power to an internal terminator

The SCSI bus can have up to eight devices sharing the bus. However,
communication is allowed between only two devices at any given time.
Each SCSI device has a SCSI ID bit assigned to is as shown below.

     SCSI ID Bits
  SCSI ID Data Bus
     0 DB(0)
     1 DB(1)
     2 DB(2)
     3 DB(3)
     4 DB(4)
     5 DB(5)
     6 DB(6)
     7 DB(7)

When two SCSI devices communicate on the bus, one acts as an
initiator and the other acts as a target. The initiator originates
the operation and the target performs the operation. The drive
assumes a fixed role as a target.

 Functional Description
 ----------------------
The drive contains all necessary mechanical and electronic parts to
interpret control signals, position the recording heads over the
desired track, read and write data, and provide a contaminant free
environment for the heads and disks.

 Read/Write and Control Electronics
 ----------------------------------
One integrated circuit is mounted within the sealed enclosure in
close proximity to the read/write heads. Its function is to provide
head selection, read preamplification, and write data circuitry.

The single microporcessor-controlled circuit card provides the re-
 maining electronic functions which include:

        - Read/Write Circuitry
        - Rotary Actuator Control
        - Interface Control
        - Spin Speed Control
        - Dynamic Braking
        - Power Management

At power down or upon entering the SHUTDOWN MODE, the heads are
automatically retracted to the inner diameter of the disk and are
latched and parked on a landing zone that is inside the data tracks.

 Drive Mechanism
 ---------------
A brushless DC direct drive motor rotates the spindle at 3833 RPM.
The motor/spindle assembly is dynamically balanced to provide minimal
mechanical runout to the disks and to reduce vibration of the HDA. A
dynamic brake is used to provide a fast stop to the spindle motor
 when power is removed.

 Air Filtration System
 ---------------------
Within the sealed enclosure, a 0.3 micron filter provides a clean
environment for the heads and disks.

 Head Positioning Mechanism
 --------------------------
The read/write heads are supported by a mechanism coupled to the
 voice coil actuator.

 Read/Write Heads and Disks
 --------------------------
Data is recorded on one (or two) 95mm diameter disk through two (or
 four) microminiature metal-in-gap (MIG) heads.

 Error Correction
 ----------------
The drive uses a 88-bit Reed-Solomon code to perform error detection
and correction. The error correction polynomial is capable of
correcting single bursts of 11 bits or less on-the-fly in 1/2 sector
time without microprocessor intervention, thus with no performance
degradation. An error burst with a maximum of 22 bits or two error
bursts of up to 11 bits each per 512 byte block can also be
 corrected.

 Reliability and Maintenance
 ---------------------------
 MTBF 150,000 hours
 MTTR 10 minutes typical
 Preventive Maintenance None
 Component Design Life 5 years

 Magnetic Field
 --------------
The externally induced magnetic flux density may not exceed 6 gauss
(DC to 700 KHz) or 1 gauss (700 KHz-1.5 MHz) as measured at the
 drive surface.

 Diagnostic Routines
 -------------------
The microprocessor performs diagnostics upon application of power. If
an error is detected, the drive does not become ready.

 Safety Standard
 ---------------
Conner Peripherals disk drives are designed to comply with relevant
 product safety standards such as:

 - UL 478, 5th edition, Standard for Safety of Information Processing
and Business Equipment, and UL 1950, Standard for Safety of
   Information Technology Equipment.
