Strangely enough, Rampart doesn't work under SBOS after v2.02 unless you
use the -o13 switch. It doesn't work with -o1 -o3, nor -o1 and -o3. So
if you've got a program that is not giving you any sound, try that switch.
Oh yeah, the -o13 switch first appeared from someone else.

Yes, 3-d can work with speakers. Not as well as with headphones, for
sure, but the concept does work. I speak from experience - I've heard
it work at an audio engineers society convention in 1991. (Not from
a GUS, obviously, but Roland has a professional studio device which
does the same thing.) The technology is only fairly recent, and the
hardware is therefore expensive, which is why few use it. But those
of you with the Rolling Stones album "Steel Wheels" (I think!), the
3-d gear was used in its recording, along with a couple of other CDs
I can't remember offhand.
You do, of course, have to be sitting somewhere near the focal point
of the speakers to hear the effect properly!

And I think I am correct in saying that the cut 'n' paste feature is enabled
in the Cakewalk for windows version which means you can do your work on the
demo, cut it, paste it into another MIDI application and save it.

I think I am correct in saying that the cut and paste feature of the
demo version of cakewalk for windows hasn't been disabled. So to save
or load your MIDI files, just cut and paste to another MIDI program
which has a file open / save command.

Dear Fellow Gusers
There has been alot of talk about John Smith and others at the
Gravis HQ not returning mail to important questions. I have even sent
mail to specific people at Gravis.com and I get no response. Now I am not
the pushy sort and figure people are busy but after reading all the notes
of others who are experiencing the same problem I felt compelled to write.
I am mad as hell. It seems from reading the digest that those who read
and post on it are a growing and very loyal customer base. We have
happily waited through screwup after screwup on the SBOS. We have put up
with one problem after another and lost much sleep trying to get our GUSes
to work. We [I] have spent gobbs of money calling the Gravis BBS in
Canada to get the latest news on the GUS. Often it was wrong.
Well, Gravis Tech that is no way to run a business if you cheese enough of
us loyalists off long enough we like the American Whigs of the
Revolutionary War are going to tell you to go to hell. There is no reason
that you cannot ansewer our questions and queries. I do not want to hear
"Oh most of the questions we get are a waste of time" X WRONG ANSEWER
Rule #1 in business school is The Customer is ALWAYS RIGHT. We know that
Gravis is a small company but we spend our money to keep you employed. I
for one want ansewers to my questions in a timely fashion.
Fellow GUSers I propose that all of you who have experienced a similar delay
in questions to your problems write in over and over until you do get one.
Each time demanding satisfaction and more professionalism. For $140.00
that is the least you deserve.
One more time Gravis people I hope you are listening we are the ones who
make it possible to have a job. Listen to us, be reasonable to us and we
will make you fat with our cash. Otherwise you'll wind up like IBM or NeXT
or worse.
One unhappy camper.

I would be very interested in a program that would simulate a midi keyboard
on my computer keyboard (much like KBMIDI) that can save it's output to a midi
file. I don't own a stand alone keyboard, but I'd like to be able to input
simple melodies using my computer keyboard. Is this possible? Does a program
exist for this? Thanks.

Has anyone actually been able to write a usable patch with PeD 0.2? I seem
to be having two recurring problems with it:
1) When I choose to resample a patch (from a .wav file), PeD gives me a
message something like "Ouch! Not a mono wav file" when in fact it
is indeed a mono wave file.
2) Once I am finished editing the patch and try to use it (by creating a
.cfg file), playmidi crashes every time (this could of course be because
I may be creating the new patch incorrectly).
Also, how do I substitute one patch for another in windows (since the .cfg
file isn't looked at). I haven't been able to find anywhere in the
Midi Mapper setup to change this.

I found that out that you can only have a limited amount of chords,
melody, bass and drum section defined. I think powerchords puked when I
had 15 chords, 25 melodies, and 15 bass sections defined.

I found the way you enter notes in melodies, etc a pain. you have to
use the shift key along with your mouse to enter notes longer than the
current setting of the grids.

Yes I found this to. Also there is the annoying feature that it will only save
MIDI files up to the length of 64K in size.
I think I am right in saying that both these packages are basically
just demos. They seem to get bundled with several of the sound cards.

A couple of people have asked whether or not John Smith (the Gravis
BBS SysOp) ever answers his mail. My answer is: yes. I've been
successful 3 out of 3 times, and have also received unsolicited
answers to questions I posed to the Net via the GUS digest.

to whoever had that printer problem: check the irq being used by the midi
part of the gus from the set commands... i'll bet one of them is also the
prn irq: specifically of lpt1 or lpt2, whichever the printer is plugged into
to the user of both SB and GUS from yesterday's post:
put the SB on address 220 and gus on 240... all gus programs will still find
the gus, but SB programs do not check.. also stop loading sbos if you have
hardare support by default just by having the SB in the computer...

OK--I had an idea for an inventive use of the GUS... Living here in my
humble dorm room, I think it would be kinda useful (and maybe a little fun!)
to have a security-type program that would monitor sounds in the room, and
when they got above a certain threshold level, an "alarm" from the sound
card would go off, or maybe a loud "stop thief" or something along those
lines... Does anyone know if there's anything out there that will do this
for me? Otherwise, maybe if some hacker out there who's got a lot of time
on his/her hands needs a project to play around with, this'd be a good one...
As for me, I don't have enough programming experience yet--especially with
sound card drivers...! :) Well, signing off...
