Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability
The RISC System/6000 (R) POWERstation (TM)/POWERserver (TM)
230 is designed to be an entry desktop workstation or server and is
binary compatible with the IBM RISC System/6000
POWERstation/POWERserver family of systems. The
POWERstation/POWERserver 230 features a POWER Single Chip processor
with 8KB of mixed instruction and data cache, and an additional 128KB
of level 2 cache.
The POWERstation/POWERserver 230 has integrated SCSI and
Ethernet (Thick) controllers. It has extensive growth capability
with up to 64MB of ECC memory, internal fixed disk of up to 1GB, up
to a maximum of seven SCSI devices (including an optional internal
fixed disk drive) on the SCSI bus, an optional 2.88MB diskette drive,
an optional POWER Gt1x graphics adapter, and two 32-bit Micro Channel
(R) card slots for optional features.
The POWERstation 23T is a workstation model with a Gt1x
graphics adapter with appropriate cable, 400MB disk, keyboard, mouse
and the POWERdisplay 16S standard with a select to POWERdisplay 16 or
POWERdisplay 19. The POWERstation 23W is a workstation model with a
Gt1x graphics adapter, 400MB disk, keyboard and mouse. The
POWERserver 23S comes complete with a 1GB SCSI-2 disk drive and
8-port RS-232 adapter.
The Model 23E is an upgrade from the POWERstation/POWERserver
220 series to provide 230 performance for existing 220 customers.
The POWER Gt1x high-performance 8-bit 2D graphics adapter is
an 8-bit, 256 color adapter that supports 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768
pixels non-interlaced displays. This graphics adapter performs at
approximately two to three times the speed of the POWER Gt1 (TM)
graphics adapter.

DESCRIPTION
INTEGRATED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
The POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series supports customers' business
objectives by providing a high-performance, desktop
workstation/server solution for compute-intensive technical
applications or multi-user commercial server applications. With the
2D Gt1x or the 3D Gt4e graphics adapter, the workstation Models 23T
and 23W are ideally suited to environments where high-performance and
low cost-per-seat are important. Model 23S, with its standard 1GB
disk drive and 8-port adapter, is a cost-effective server for retail,
branch banking, wholesale and plant floor applications. Memory
capacity of up to 64MB and internal fixed disk capacity of up to 1GB,
coupled with a variety of input/output devices, graphics and
communications features, enable the configuration of the system as a
powerful, low-priced, entry POWERstation or POWERserver for a wide
range of business solutions.
The POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series desktop workstations
use POWER Architecture (TM) and are binary compatible with the IBM
RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver family of systems, with
application portability and high throughput levels. The
POWERserver/POWERstation 230 with AIX/6000 Version 3.2, conforms to
many industry standards in the open system environment -- a key
factor to enable customers to develop and port applications.

ASSET PROTECTION
The POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series, with AIX/6000 3.2, offers
interoperability with other IBM and other vendor host systems,
expanding the usefulness of those systems and maximizing the utility
of the 230 series. Any model 220 can be upgraded to a 23E. The
POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series, with its POWER Single Chip
processor offers competitive fixed-point processing and
floating-point processing for the entry workstation market. The
POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series can be configured as a diskless
or dataless system with integrated SCSI and Ethernet controllers.
Because of its optional feature offerings it can also be configured
as an independent workstation, a file or communications server, or a
distributed system.
INTEROPERABILITY IMPROVEMENTS
The POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series supports AIXwindows
Environment/6000, which is based on the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) X Window System and includes a graphical user
interface based on OSF/Motif (2). With industry standard OSF/Motif,
savings may be realized in end-user training and application
development. Additionally, savings in hardware may be realized with
LAN-attached Xstations, to reduce cost-per-seat.
AIXwindows Environment/6000, based on the versatile OSF/Motif
graphics user interface, provides the user with icons to represent
files, printers and system objects, and allows the user to manipulate
the file system through the icons. Support for InfoExplorer (TM),
the online documentation aid, offers the user flexible access to
online documentation using task index, hypertext jump points and
search features. These features allow users to become a participant
quickly, minimizing training and reducing costs.

INCREASED CAPACITY/PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT
The POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series is designed to grow with the
customer's requirements. Memory can be increased to a maximum of
64MB. A maximum of seven SCSI devices (including optional internal
fixed disk drive) can be attached.
The integrated SCSI controller attaches up to seven SCSI
devices. One internal disk drive may be installed in the
POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series. A 200MB, 400MB or 1GB drive can
be installed. Additional external disk devices may be attached for a
maximum of 9.5GB. One integrated Ethernet controller and the POWER
Gt1x adapter slot allow the user to have a LAN attachment and
additional I/O devices and graphics without using any of the Micro
Channel slots.
Two Micro Channel feature card slots (form factor three) are
available for additional features such as a token-ring adapter,
communications processors and high-performance graphics processors.
IS OPERATIONS PRODUCTIVITY
A system installation and management facility is provided as part of
the operating system. The System Management Interface Tool (SMIT)
facilitates the performance of system management tasks, such as:
o Software Installation and Configuration
o Device Configuration and Management
o Problem Determination
o Storage Management.
Support is also provided for the use of an ASCII terminal as
the system console and remote installation of the system on a LAN.
AIX/6000 is designed to meet the National Computer Security
Center (NCSC) trusted computer system evaluation criteria class C2
security support requirements.
ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION
BASE MODEL CONFIGURATION
POWERSTATION/POWERSERVER 230: The RISC System/6000
POWERstation/POWERserver 230 is a performance-enhanced version of the
POWERstation/POWERserver 220. It is based on the RISC Single Chip
processor with 8KB of mixed instruction and data cache, and an
additional 128KB of level 2 cache.
The entry POWERstation/POWERserver can function without a
fixed disk in a LAN environment, or with a fixed disk and diskette
drive added in a stand-alone environment. Customers can upgrade
memory and add features to enhance the system.
Standard features for the POWERstation/POWERserver 230 are:
o 16MB memory
o One integrated SCSI controller
o One integrated Ethernet controller:
- The output connector is a Thick 15-pin D-shell "slide-latch"
type that is compatible with IEEE 802.3 Section 7.6.
Connection to Thick Ethernet media is via Ethernet/IEEE 802.3
AUI cable available from OEM vendors. Attachment to Thin (10
Base 2) or Twisted Pair (10 Base T) Ethernet media is via
optional external Transceivers (#4223 and #4224
respectively).
o One fixed disk bay and one diskette bay available for expansion
o Two Micro Channel card slots for expansion (form factor 3)
o One slot for the POWER Gt1x Graphics Adapter
o Standard device ports/connectors:

PRECONFIGURED MODELS: Specially-priced preconfigured models are
available by ordering the standard model configurations defined
below.
POWERSTATION 23T GRAPHICS WORKSTATION: The graphics workstation can
operate in a LAN environment or, with a diskette drive, in a
stand-alone environment. Customers can upgrade memory, disk capacity
and graphics.
This model is appropriate for desktop publishing, CASE, 2D
CAD, Electrical Design Automation, student workstations, or other
environments where low-cost RISC workstations are appropriate. With
the optional Gt4e adapter, the 23T is a cost-effective 3D
workstation. The POWERdisplay 16 is a selectable option for
customers who require a flicker-free image. This selectable display
also provides auxiliary power, video signal redrive and the Premium
OCLI screen coating.
The standard features for the POWERstation 23T are the same as
the POWERstation/POWERserver 230 with the following additional
features:
o POWERdisplay 16S (1280 x 1024 pixels resolution display)

POWERSTATION 23W: The POWERstation 23W is configured identically to
the 23T, but comes without the display for environments where an
appropriate display is already available.
POWERSERVER 23S: The POWERserver 23S is ideally suited for
environments attaching multiple async terminals such as retail, data
entry, small office, banking and insurance.
The standard features for the POWERserver 23S are the same as
the POWERstation/POWERserver 230 with the following additional
features:
o 1GB SCSI-2 Disk Drive
o 8-Port ASYNC Adapter with fan-out cable
o Async Select Options: 16-Port and 128-Port.
MODEL CONVERSIONS
POWERSTATION 23E: A field-installable model conversion is offered to
convert installed POWERstation/POWERserver 220, 22G and 22W to the
POWERstation/POWERserver 23E. All of the fixed disk media devices
and most features may be retained for use on the converted system,
except for the POWER Gt1 Graphics Adapter. A customer's investment
in installed systems is protected.
POWER GT1X: The POWER Gt1x is a low-priced 8-bit, 256 color graphics
adapter that attaches directly to the local processor I/O bus. It
does not require a Micro Channel slot. The POWER Gt1x requires
AIXwindows Environment/6000 Version 1.2.3 (support for X11R5), or
later.

DISPLAYS
POWERDISPLAY 16S: The POWERdisplay 16S Color Display provides a
16-inch non-interlaced high-resolution color display with a silica
anti-reflective CRT screen treatment that meets ISO 9241 Part 3
requirements when operated at the recommended brightness of 90 nits.
The display contrast control is marked with a green dot to guide the
user to the correct setting.
VOLTAGE/POWER CORD: No specify code is required to order the default
six-foot power cord option. High voltage (200-240 V AC 50Hz) and the
appropriate power cord will be supplied automatically based on the
three digit country code.

POWERDISPLAY 16: The POWERdisplay 16 is a 16-inch high-resolution
graphics raster scan color display. The POWERdisplay 16 is intended
for high-resolution graphic applications and supports an analog RGB,
and separate horizontal and vertical sync. The POWERdisplay provides
sharp, bright and realistic colors with minimum distortion. Signal
redrive is provided for all input signals. The anti-reflective CRT
surface treatment virtually eliminates screen reflections while
optimizing image quality.
The POWERdisplay 16 meets ISO 9241 Part 3 recommendations for
Video Display Terminal (VDT) ergonomics and also meets Very Low
Frequency Magnetic Field (VLMF) and Extremely Low Frequency Magnetic
Field (ELMF) emission standards, and virtually eliminates static
discharge from the front of the screen. Operator controls for power,
brightness, contrast, selectable screen formats, horizontal and
vertical static convergence, vertical centering, and indicators are
included in a front accessible panel. A tilt swivel base is
standard.

MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: The requirements for operating the
POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series are:
o A RISC System/6000-supported ASCII terminal or a
POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series-supported display, display
adapter and keyboard.
o For installation and support of diskless or dataless
POWERstation/POWERserver 230 series systems, the network to which
the system is attached must contain at least one IBM RISC
System/6000 system that has a 3.5-inch diskette drive.
Diagnostics are run off the host if the POWERstation/POWERserver
230 series is attached to a network as a client. In addition,
that IBM RISC System/6000 must have AIX/6000 Version 3.2, at the
current level, installed and operational.
o For stand-alone configurations, a disk drive and diskette drive
are required. Diagnostics must be run from a diskette or disk
drive for stand-alone systems.
- An external media unit is recommended to support software
distribution in stand-alone environments.
PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: AIX/6000 Version 3.2, at the level,

COMPLIMENTARY AIX/6000 SUPPORTLINE PROGRAM: IBM will provide three
months of complimentary AIX/6000 SupportLine service for customers

installation, how-to and usage questions about eligible AIX/6000 and
