IBM PS/2 MICRO CHANNEL SCSI ADAPTER WITH CACHE

IBM Announcement Letter Number 192-067 dated March 24, 1992
IBM US - Last Revised on March 24, 1992

Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability

IBM is announcing a redesigned version of the Personal
System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Micro Channel (R) SCSI Adapter with Cache
(#1132, 6451133). This new version of the PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI
Adapter with Cache eliminates the requirement to terminate the small
computer system interface (SCSI) bus at the external port of the
adapter, with no external devices attached. The PS/2 Micro Channel
SCSI Adapter External Terminator (#1039, 6451039) is not required
with the new adapter (#1132, 6451133). This 32-bit bus master SCSI
adapter can be installed in either a 16- or 32-bit card slot; has
16.6MB burst transfer rate and 512KB cache buffer; and adheres to the
industry standard SCSI interface that supports connection for
multiple internal or external devices.
IBM SCSI adapters provide the ability to connect SCSI
high-performance fixed disk drives, scanners, printers, CD-ROMs and
other SCSI peripherals. The IBM PS/2 Card to Option Cable (#1140,
6451139) provides the capability to attach the first external SCSI
device to a Micro Channel SCSI adapter, and the PS/2 Option to Option
Cable (#1042, 6451042) provides the capability to attach an external
SCSI device to another external SCSI device. The PS/2 Micro Channel
SCSI Adapter Option Interface Terminator, included with the PS/2 Card
to Option Cable, is still required to terminate external SCSI
connections and must be installed on the last external SCSI device.
       Availability Date: March 24, 1992.

DESCRIPTION
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
The redesigned PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter with Cache provides
customers with system configuration flexibility to support multiple
internal and/or external SCSI devices such as high-performance fixed
disk drives, CD-ROM drives, tape drives, scanners and printers. With
its burst transfer rate of 16.6MB per second, adhering to the
industry standard ANSI SCSI interface, and support in either a 16- or
32-bit Micro Channel slot, this adapter offers customers an
attractive business solution.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
The PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter With Cache provides system
configuration flexibility to meet expanding application and business
environment requirements. By adhering to the small computer systems
interface, which supports up to seven SCSI devices attached to a PS/2
SCSI adapter, the customer has the capability and flexibility to
configure a system with additional fixed disk drives, scanners,
printers and tape drives.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The IBM PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter with Cache (#1132, 6451133)
offers enhanced configurability and expandability for all IBM PS/2
Micro Channel systems. This bus master adapter provides an
intelligent SCSI device interface capable of transferring data among
numerous SCSI devices such as fixed disk drives, CD-ROMs, optical
files, tape drives, scanners and various printers.
The IBM PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter with Cache is a 32-bit
bus master SCSI adapter containing a 512KB cache buffer that allows
system memory to be totally dedicated to running the application
rather than a portion being reserved for software caching. This SCSI
adapter should be recommended where improved data transfer rates
and/or multiple SCSI devices are required and system memory is
constrained.

COMPATIBILITY: The IBM SCSI optional products are designed to
maintain compatibility with current software support that uses the
standard defined BIOS interfaces.
LIMITATIONS: Support of SCSI devices other than fixed disks is not a
part of the base operating system support. Devices other than fixed
disks require the use of a device driver module that will function
with the IBM SCSI Adapter BIOS and the operating system. Device
driver modules are usually shipped with the SCSI device.
USER GROUP REQUIREMENTS: This announcement satisfies, or partially
satisfies, requirements from one or more of the worldwide user group
communities, which include Australasian SHARE GUIDE (ASG), COMMON,
COMMON EUROPE, GUIDE, European G.U.I.D.E., Japan GUIDE SHARE (JGS),
Latin American GUIDE (LAG), SHARE EUROPE and SHARE.
PLANNING INFORMATION
CABLE ORDERS: The PS/2 Card to Option Cable (#1140, 6451139) is a
60-pin to 50-pin cable that connects from the external connector of
the adapter to the first external SCSI option, or other equipment
manufacturer's device, that meets the ANSI SCSI STANDARD
(X3.131-1986). The cable is approximately four feet (1,220
millimeters) in length. The PS/2 Option Interface Terminator,
included with the PS/2 Card to Option Cable, is a 50-pin terminator
that is connected to the last SCSI device to terminate the SCSI bus.
       The PS/2 Option to Option Cable (#1042, 6451042), is a 50-pin
to 50-pin cable that connects one external SCSI device to another
external SCSI device ("daisy chain" fashion), or other equipment
manufacturer's device, that meets the ANSI SCSI STANDARD
(X3.131-1986) for single-ended devices. The cable is approximately
two feet (610 millimeters) in length.
NOTE: Single-ended implementations are limited to a maximum distance
of 20 feet (6 meters) between the SCSI devices at the end-to-end
position on the SCSI bus.
INSTALLABILITY: The SCSI adapter requires about 30 minutes to
install.
NOTE: SCSI devices have device IDs that may need to be set by the
installer. The specific instructions are contained as part of the
optional setup package.
Device ID 6 is the IPL device if only SCSI devices are part of the
system. This should be checked when installing additional devices on
the SCSI adapter.
PROBLEM DETERMINATION: The standard system error indications should
be followed to resolve all problems.

SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
Security and auditability features of the system in which this
product is installed are:
o A mechanical lock to allow the user to lock the system cover
o A user-invoked password function used to prevent use of the
    system by unauthorized persons.
LIMITATIONS: SCSI, as defined in the American National Standard
Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for the
attachment of external devices. The SCSI bus may be internal or
external to the system unit. The IBM PS/2 SCSI adapters are in
conformance with this standard and have an external port.
A data security exposure exists even with Power-On Password
installed, since external SCSI adapters can attach through the
external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data

stored on internal and external SCSI devices.
Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must
be controlled to limit this exposure.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
facilities.
