40 Meg Hard Disk Card (250-4059) Initialization Faxback Doc. # 3028

DO NOT USE HSECT FOR LOW LEVEL FORMATTING OF HARDCARD.

* NOTE: On ROM based machines such as the 1000 SL/TL series modifications
to the setup program are needed.

    Primary start up program (DISK)
    Initial start up program (DOS)

The 25-4059 hardcard should be formatted using the "autoinstall" program
which is included on the hardcards "c:\ directory".

AT a DOS prompt type: C:INSTALL <ENTER>

NOTE: You should never use an autoinstall disk you are not familiar with
EXAMPLE: (from a friend or stores 20 meg install).

ALTERNATE FORMAT PROCEDURE DEBUG:

The recording surfaces of the hardcard media are the product of a
manufacturing process and are, therefore, not 100% perfect. Because of
this, a map is made of those areas that may not be usable and will be
restricted from use. This "media error map" can be found on the top of the
drive. Some drives will have no restricted areas, therefore the "media
error map" will have no entries. Before installing the hardcard into your
computer, take time to record this information. Only the head and cylinder
information is required.

DEBUG "hardcards low level format" is listed below step by step:
At an A:\ prompt, with MS-DOS in drive a:\ type: DEBUG <ENTER>

At the debug prompt (HYPHEN), type: G=C800:5 <ENTER>

The first question is "Current drive is C: select new drive or return
for current?. <ENTER>

Answer the second question by pressing <ENTER> "Accept Default Interleave"

Answer the third question, "Are you dynamically configuring the drive?",
with a (Y).

* For the 25-4059 SEAGATE ST157R version of this drive:

At the prompt, type: 522^6^522^522^11^7 <ENTER> (where: ^ is a space)

* For the 25-4059A WESTERN DIGITAL WD-344R version of this drive:

At the prompt, type: 782^4^782^782^11^7 <ENTER> (where: ^ is a space)

Answer the question, "are you virtually configuring the drive?", with a (Y).

You will now see the following question, "Key in cylinder number for virtual
drive split as XXXX... (this creates the partition size)

* 25-4059 SEAGATE ST157R version:

For a c:\ partition size of 32 meg you would input 392 <ENTER>
for a c:\ partition size of 20 meg you would input 261 <ENTER>

The partition size for the Seagate version of this drive is derived
approximately by multiplying 79872 by the number of cylinders. The system
will automatically subtract the number of cylinders you enter from 522 and
assign the remainder to the next logical drive.

* 25-4059A WESTERN DIGITAL WD-344R version:

For a C:\ partition size of 32 meg you would input 594 <ENTER>
For a C:\ partition size of 20 meg you would input 391 <ENTER>

The partition size for the Western Digital version of this drive is derived
approximately by multiplying 53248 by the number of cylinders. The system
will automatically subtract the number of cylinders you enter from 782 and
assign the remainder to the next logical drive.

At the prompt "Press 'Y' to begin formatting drive C with interleave 04".
After approximately 15 minutes, you will be prompted with:

"Do you want to format restricted cylinders: answer Y/N?.

If you have bad cylinders listed on your media error map you will need to
enter (Y) at this time; if not answer (N) and continue.

To input bad cylinders follow example:

EXAMPLE: HD,CYL
           2,104 <ENTER>

When through inputting flawed areas "heads/tracks" <ENTER> to begin low
level format.

When the low level format operation is complete, restart system with the
MS-DOS diskette.

You are now ready to run "FDISK", at an a:\ prompt with MS-DOS in drive A:\
type:

FDISK <ENTER>

You should be prompted with FDISK menu options.

Choose #1, create dos partition <ENTER>
Select primary partition <ENTER>

If you wish to use the maximum space available for drive c:\ press <ENTER>
as "Y" is default.

Choose "N" if you want any other partition size and enter the number
cylinders of partition size "XXX <ENTER>".

"EXAMPLE: 261 for Seagate 20 meg partition"

Your system will now reboot, at the a:\ prompt return to fdisk options with
FDISK <ENTER>

At the FDISK main menu:

Choose #1 create dos partition <ENTER>
Choose #2 extended dos partition <ENTER>.

The system will automatically subtract the number of remaining cylinders
for the extended partition (logical drive).

At the FDISK main menu:

Choose #1 create dos partition <ENTER>.
Choose #3 Create logical drive <ENTER>, as this will assign a logical drive
for the extended partition.

You are now ready to exit FDISK and begin with FORMAT command.

The active partition "first partition" should be formatted with the
"/S" to place the system files on the drive.

EXAMPLE: FORMAT C: /S <ENTER>

Once the format is complete you are ready to load programs and files onto
the hardcard.
