AST RESEARCH, INC. INFORMATIONAL BULLETIN # 0015 09/24/96

TITLE: CMOS Plug-and-Play Settings and OS Type

SUMMARY

When the user elects to install a Plug-and-Play (PnP) Operating
System (OS) on a system that originally shipped with a non-PnP OS,
numerous hardware detection and configuration issues may arise.

NOTES

Since the release of Windows 95, the BIOS used in AST systems has
included a PnP OS option. This option must be properly selected
prior to booting, and it must match the type of OS chosen.

Operating systems such as DOS/Windows 3.X, UNIX, and NetWare are
not PnP-aware. Windows 95 is the best example of a PnP-aware OS.

AST ships its computers with the BIOS set according to the OS
which is factory installed. If a different type of OS is later
installed, the user must properly set the PnP OS option in System
Setup to reflect the requirements of the chosen OS. Otherwise,
configuration difficulties, resource conflicts, and erratic
   system behavior may occur.

Please refer to your computer's User's Manual for details on
entering System Setup and modifying setup parameters.
